Do Millennials Care More About Career Happiness Than Money?

Do most job seekers today just want to be happy? It seems as though no matter what millennials do for a living, their true goal is to obtain happiness, whether they are doing it subconsciously or consciously. In fact, research has shown that a common trend in millennial job-seekers is a desire to wait for their niche to appear. In other words, they will take a high paying job that has no intrinsic value, but have the intention or desire to do something that is a genuine love or passion with a much lower paycheck in the future.

Why is this? Since the Great Recession of 2008, Generation Y, or the millennial generation, has been having a hard time, despite being the most educated generation in American history. They are facing one of the worst job markets in decades. They are in debt from student loans, and many of them are unemployed all together. The income gap between old and young Americans is widening. What is more discouraging to many of these Gen-Y members, is that most articles you read about milennials today are talking about how entitled, lazy, or self-centered they are. One theory is that many of these individuals feel demeaned by these assumptions, and tough economic times. Therefore, they have been forced to rethink success so that it’s less about material prosperity and more about something else; happiness.

Happiness can be defined differently depending on who you are talking to. Many millennials appear to be more interested in living lives defined by meaning. In fact, a 2011 report commissioned by the Career Advisory Board and conducted by Harris Interactive found that the #1 factor that young adults ages 21 to 31 wanted in a successful career was in fact, a sense of meaning.

This discovery creates an interesting opportunity for the temporary staffing industry, whom have the chance to introduce their candidates to a wide variety of industries and job descriptions, which some millennials may actually prefer so that they can “test the waters” before deciding on a final career choice.
