Staffing Insurance: Graduate Students Are Shifting Their Career Focus

According to a report by Melissa Korn from the Wall Street Journal News Hub, a record number of business graduate students are shifting their career focus from finance to technology. At Harvard Business School, 18% of job-seeking students landed tech-sector spots this year, up from 12% in 2012. A similar shift is happening at the business schools at Yale University and Cornell University, where the share of graduates going into tech more than doubled over the past two years.

In the meantime, just 27% of Harvard Business School graduates took jobs in finance this year, down from 35% last year. That figure dropped to 16% from 27% at the MIT Sloan School of Management. Surprisingly, many business-school graduates are even accepting somewhat lower pay for what they perceive as more meaningful work- once unthinkable for these elite students known for chasing profits.

Students are asking, “”Where’s the place that I can drive innovation? Where’s the place that I can have the most impact?” says Derrick Bolton, assistant dean and director of M.B.A admissions, and interim director of the career management center at Stanford’s business school.

Although banks and other financial institutions still hire plenty of M.B.A’s including students from the prestigious schools mentioned above, the numbers are shrinking. This is especially true in investment banking, which has historically been the ideal job for these M.B.A students. Experts believe that a large part of the reason for this shift is due to the lingering aftereffects of the financial crisis, along with Wall Street’s long hours and scaled-back pay. Whatever the reason, it’s interesting for staffing agencies to note the shift and may be beneficial to placing candidates or acquiring client leads.
